Kennebec, one of the smaller counties in the state, is located in central Maine. While it may not take up a lot of space, this county has one of the highest populations of any in the area. A little over 115,000 residents call Kennebec their home. This county also houses three very different schools – Colby College and Thomas College share Waterville while the University of Maine has an extension in Augusta.
Kennebec was once home to the Algonquian and Wabanaki tribes. As one of Maine’s “newer” counties, Kennebec wasn’t established until 1799—nearly 200 years after Maine’s first County, York, was founded.
Each town has it’s own unique feel but all possess a quintessential Maine charm. For the outdoor enthusiast Kennebec offers some of the states best bird watching, golf, and ATV trails. Although Kennebec isn’t one of Maine’s many oceanfront counties, it’s residents and visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking fishing, and tubing on Great Pond, Messalonskee Lake, Maranacok Lake or Cobbosseecontee Lake. Folks looking for a little more adventure enjoy white water rafting in the spring and summer and a vast array of snow mobile trails in the winter.
