Family Land, Family Business: Carter's Cross Country Ski Center in Bethel Maine

The Carter Family is a well-known bunch in the Bethel area as their original homestead from the 1700’s is still occupied by descendants today. Their land and homestead on the Intervale Road is used for multiple purposes: a residence, a farm, and a cross country ski center.

Ann Carter was kind enough to take the time to talk to me about the cross country center that she operates on family land.

There are more than 50 kilometers (30+ Miles) of trails that wind through the forested riverbanks of the Androscoggin River. These trails are open for snowshoeing, classic skiing and skate skiing. A portion of the trails are designated as “dog-friendly” so even those with paws are able to enjoy the ski center.

Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center offers more than trails. They have a full retail shop with skis, boots and bindings available for skiers of every size and experience level. Rental options are also available for day use. The lodge at Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center is available for room rentals, and there are three remote cabins in the woods that allow for skiers to pack in their gear and enjoy a back-country accommodation.

In 2016, Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center worked out an agreement with Barker Mountain Bike Shop in Bethel to rent fat tire bikes for use on their trails. These bikes have been a lot of fun and offer an exciting form of exercise for those who have never tried it!

Ann Carter is proud of the business she runs, and for good reason. Her ski center attracts repeat skiers year after year. Locals enjoy frequenting the ski center because the trails are always in prime condition. “Lots of times we’ll know when the chairlifts at Sunday River are on wind hold, a lot of the skiers that are in the area for their ski vacation, will come out here and spend an afternoon in the woods” says Carter.

With reliable trail conditions, a variety of terrain and a beautiful landscape, it is easy to see what keeps bringing people back.

If you visit Bethel as one of your vacation destinations, be sure to plan on spending some time out at Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center, the views and quality of trails will make your cross country ski experience memorable. To hear from Ann directly, please check out our video below.
