The Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude festival has been rated the second-best Christmas festival in the nation, and is always included on worldwide lists of the best places to celebrate Christmas.
That’s quite the achievement for Kennebunkport Maine and its 3,000 year-round residents! Over the last 34 years, Christmas Prelude has become a two-week long celebration that is sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit and this year was no different!
The evening of December 3rd, my husband and I decided to join the hundreds of residence and visitors to take part in the tree lighting located in lower village. It was an absolute iconic chilly winter evening in Maine as we walked through the busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style and in the air there was a true feeling of Christmas.
After enjoying the tree lighting, in which we were serenaded with carols by the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir, we stopped into many shops located in downtown for some holiday shopping.
The lower village tree lighting was just one of the many events taking place through December 11, with events every day of the week. And while the first tree lighting on December 2 often draws crowds of 10,000 people to Dock Square, it is really the more low key events that keep visitors coming back year after year.
And don’t worry, if you were unable to take part in this year’s festivities, there is always next year and no matter what events you choose to enjoy, Christmas Prelude is sure to be the perfect way to kick off your holiday season!
