Maine's second largest city behind Portland, Lewiston sits in the south-central part of the state. The Androscoggin River runs along Lewiston's downtown and separates its neighboring city of Auburn. Lewiston is home to Bates College, a very small yet prestigious liberal arts college with the vast majority of its students living on campus. Bates College also hosts an annual Dance Festival, and its Museum of Art sees over 22,000 visitors each year.
Lewiston also enjoys numerous parks and outdoor sanctuaries, including the Thorncrag Bird Santuary, Kennedy Park, Franklin Pasture, Simard-Payne Memorial Park, Sunnyside Park, and many more. In between the river and Bates College is the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, a stunning landmark and beautiful place to visit. The city is rich in history and many of its events are focused on celebrating that history. The Lewiston Public Library was renovated in 1996 and houses a cultural center that hosts concerts, film festivals, and the like. Lewiston also has many art museums including Museum L-A, a renovated textile factory that pays tribute to the people who lived and worked in the community.
