Holiday Safety Tips

The holidays are an amazing time to relax, connect with friends and family, and enjoy time away from school or work. So make the most of this season - use these safety tips to keep your loved ones safe and happy during the holidays.

Decorating the tree

  • Keep young children in mind when decorating the tree. Put larger, less fragile ornaments on bottom branches and keep small and fragile ornaments out of reach on higher branches.

  • Use a stand that matches the size of your tree. There is no one-size-fits all tree stand. Check the box to make sure the stand you are using is appropriate for the height and weight of your tree.

  • Make sure your tree is properly watered at all times. Dried-out Christmas trees are a fire hazard.

  • Use a step ladder, not a chair or stool, to place ornaments on hard to reach branches.

  • Check the entire string of lights for frayed wires or cords before hanging.

  • Modern holiday-style lights have fused plugs which prevent sparks in case of a short circuit. Throw out your old lights in favor of the new, safer models.

  • If you need to hang lights up high, use a stable ladder and make sure there is someone spotting you at all times.

  • Use insulated hooks to hang lights, rather than metal tacks or screws which can damage the cable and become electrified.

  • For outdoor lights, keep cord connectors elevated so that snow and debris does not get into the connections.

Candles & Fireplaces

  • Keep candles, lighters, matches out of the reach of children at all times.

  • Make sure candles are positioned away from walls, curtains and decorative items.

  • Never leave a burning candle or fireplace unattended.

  • Make sure the flue is opened prior to lighting a fire in a fireplace. Keep it open until the fire is completely extinguished.

  • Do not burn wreaths, wrapping paper or other trash in the fireplace.

Finally, remember to always plan plenty of time to travel and make adjustments for winter weather as needed!
